Sunday April 26, 2020

Hello UCO supporters.

We distributed over 180 and 240 to-go lunches on the last two Sunday afternoons, respectively.

We have also been accommodating a growing need for grocery packs during our drop-in center hours.  Yesterday, 38 grocery packs

were given to individuals and families, many of whom live near our center and walked over.  We also began our partnership project with DAYS Long Beach to provide groceries to a handful of their families.

Every lunch bag also included a list of local food banks and other resources that may meet the needs of our guests during the week.

We have met the increasing demand for lunches and groceries thanks to the help of so many partners and supporters – Food Finders, First Congregational Church LB, Unitarian Universalist Church LB, Temple Baptist Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and their members; UCO Board members; and many, many community members – too long to list.

Thank you to Nancy, Harold, Robert, Clayton, Steve and Cara who enthusiastically participated in our banana bread bake-off, making good use of over-ripe bananas left over from the previous week.   They made enough that every lunch bag included a slice of the delicious bread.

We are thankful to Micaela and others of Long Beach Time Exchange (two weeks in a row) and Cara for supplying us with hand-crafted face masks for our clients.

Thank you to Katiana and Kevin for bringing 100 small spray bottles of isopropyl alcohol for our guests.

This week we are asking your help in collecting turkey lunch meat, peanut butter, crackers and bottled water.  Donations may be dropped off at our alley door on Saturday morning.  UCO staff will set up a table in the doorway at the second alley door, and people are asked to drive by between 10 and 11 am and put donations on the table. Staff will remain on the other side of the table and keep a safe distance from donors.

During the week, we continue our case management via phone calls and emails, including virtual home visits.  One of our families will be moving into their new apartment in Signal Hill this Friday.  We are working with others and hope that they secure units soon.

Thank you for your support and please consider donating to UCO at www.ucodic.org.
