Sunday, April 22, a 4th Sunday, dawned too early for Urban Community Outreach staff and volunteers. We had been working extra hard on our April 21, “Heart of Broadway” fundraising held here at First Congregational Church. The event turned out beautiful. The trees in the courtyard were decked out with white lights and brightly colored flowers graced the area. Patterson Hall was full of gold stars and twinkling lights. Koininia Room was full of exciting silent auction and opportunity drawing items. During the Reception in the Koininia Room, Owen Lovejoy wowed everyone as he sang Broadway show tunes for us. He was accompanied by Trevor Gordon on the piano. Emilio Martinez also sang and our own Carver Cossey became inspired and sang a song for us as well. Waiters hand passed wonderful appetizers. Janet Rhodes, UCO’s Founder, was in town and in attendance. She was delighted to hear how far UCO has come and hear about all the people we now serve.
At 7pm we went over to Patterson Hall for a sumptuous dinner. Reverend, Elena Larssen, gave the blessing.
The program included honoring our Mayor Dr. Robert Garcia, Olympian, Tony Cruz, and our Industry Leaders Award went to Performance Team, who so generously gives support to UCO. A UCO ENRICH Client witnessed about how we had helped her. During dinner we heard wonderful Broadway tunes played by musicians from “Mostly Kosher”.
The event raised community awareness and impressed some of Long Beach’s finest political and prominent people. We raised some money and are still collecting and delivering things before we will have a final count on how much we took in.
Fourth Sunday went as planned at UCO. We served a delicious meal, handed out clothing and hygiene items and did case management.
