Sunday April 12, 2020

Hello UCO supporters.

Our modified drop-in center continues on Sunday afternoons – we distributed about 175 to-go lunches on the last two Sundays.  We also gave about a dozen grocery packs to housed individuals and families each Sunday.  Yesterday, we were able to enhance our offerings with Easter Baskets (thanks to Paige at CityHeart) and hygiene kits (thanks to long-time supporters Katiana and Kevin).  It lifted our hearts to see the children yesterday.

A HUGE thank you to many others in our community of new and old supporters and donors –  Calmoseptine Charity Fund; Josephine S. Gumbiner Foundation; Councilmember Suzie Price; Rev. Elena and members of FCCLB; Sandy from UUCLB; Natalie from Temple Israel; Jordan from United Way; Kent, Tess, Allison, Justin, Jean, Mary, Brittany, Nancy, Linda and Scott, Dale, Bill, Diane and George, Yvonne, Christine and Melody; and Food Finders.  Our guests were grateful to Nurse Anne who made special Vitamin C packets that were included in yesterday’s sack lunches.

Our staff were grateful for the lovely face masks that were sewn and donated by Gretchen and her neighbors in Rose Park.

Staff and I are continuing our case management during the week.  Our housing coordinator is helping people look for apartments and working closely with our clients through the rental approval process.  Yesterday, we printed the lease and other documents for a family of four that they needed to sign before receiving final approval of their apartment.  With all libraries closed, we have provided assistance in ways that we had not before.

We began providing rent-assistance to low-income families and individuals with funds from the Long Beach Disaster Relief Fund.  Some people went from living check to check to not being able to pay April’s rent.  We informed them of local employment programs, food pantries and other resources.

While we consider the safety of everyone at our modified drop-in center, we hope to continue providing a place for people who are living unsheltered to access sanitizing wipes, use restrooms (one at a time) and receive to-go food on Sunday afternoons.
