November 8 update

Autumn Greetings from UCO!

The weather has turned chilly and UCO has resumed serving up hot meals every Sunday! Our clients are very happy to once again be receiving chef Mel’s warm meals every week. Sandwiches were fine during the summertime, but as the weather changes, it is nice to be able to provide hot meals again. Our clients were thrilled to receive a hot pasta dish this Sunday, and teriyaki Chicken with rice last week.

Celia has been busy working with our housed clients who still struggle to pay the bills. We were able to help a cancer survivor stay in her apartment this month. We were also able to help a single mom of two who needed help making her rent payment after missing work due to a COVID-19 self-quarantine. We also helped provide rent assistance to another client, a mother of four who, despite working several jobs, could not catch up on back rent. Not only did the rent payment put her back on solid footing with her landlord, it gave our client some much-needed peace of mind.

Nurse Anne joined us last week to dispense flu shots and provided general health advice. We all appreciated the opportunity to get a flu shot.

Thank you to Mekaela Kaji and his Las Gemas service group for generously providing the hygiene kits that we distributed this past Sunday.

This week we are asking for your help in collecting peach/fruit cups, mac n cheese, tuna, spam or other canned meats (with pop off lids) and bottled water. Donations may be dropped off at our alley door on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. UCO staff will set up a table in the doorway at the second alley door and donors are asked to put donations on the table. We also need gently used shoes and jackets as requests are increasing for these much-needed items.

As always, thank you for the love and support you give to UCO. We are so thankful for each of you!
