May 9 Update

May started with beautiful weather and a visit from Nurse Anne. Our clients love to stop and visit, get advice and pick up vitamins and other goodies.

Mel outdid herself with an incredible Chicken Fettucine for Mother’s Day. It was delicious and kept clients coming back for more.

Celia, our housing coordinator, has been busy. This past week she helped place three seniors into housing. UCO was happy to help with deposits to obtain housing for these vulnerable seniors. We are also working to help clients with the paperwork for the Long Beach Emergency Rental Assistance Program. While many of our clients will be helped by the program, not everyone qualifies. We are working to find other resources to help our clients who do not qualify. We have several clients who owe over $1,000. The eviction moratorium ends on June 30, so we are working diligently to help these clients stay housed.

UCO is proud to be a part of Long Beach Gives, a 24-hour online giving day that takes place on September 23, 2021.

We are excited to start the planning to eventually reopen our Drop-In Center. It will be different and the process to reopen will take some time, but it will happen. We know that our clients need a place to sit and eat, use a computer and maybe even view a short movie. It’s part of what makes the Drop-In Center so special.

We are also excited about the gradual return of our volunteers. UCO has an incredible community of supporters and volunteers who help our clients. It is amazing to watch volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life come together and work to help our clients. We have missed that magic.

Please stay tuned for details of the reopening as we work with our wonderful Executive Board to begin the planning.

This week we need your help in collecting peach/fruit cups, mac n cheese, tuna, soups, spam or other canned meats (with pop-off lids) and bottled water. Donations may be dropped off at our alley door on Saturday, 10 am to 11 am. UCO staff will set up a table in the doorway at the second alley door and donors are asked to put donations on the table. If you cannot make it in and would like to send a check, you can send it to 241 Cedar Ave, Long Beach CA 90802

As always, thank you for your support. Without you, we could not do what we love to do.
