January 3 Update

“Be true to yourself. Make each day a masterpiece. Help others. Drink deeply from good books. Make friendship a fine art. Build a shelter against a rainy day.” – John Wooden

2021 is here! Happy New Year! We look forward to 2021 and the hope that it brings! We hope for an end to this pandemic, for an end to homelessness and an end to hungry people. (As much as we love our jobs, we would happily give them up for a solution.)

In the meantime, we are happy to help where we can. We are proud to serve Mel’s amazing meals each Sunday- we served over 600 in December alone. We’re grateful that we can help people when they need rental assistance, help with groceries, clothes or even helps them find a job.

Our 2021 started with Nurse Ann joining us on site. Nurse Ann saw many clients for medical advice, gave out hygiene kits and even helped give out coats and jeans to clients in need. Mel created an amazing meal of spaghetti with turkey sauce, a beautiful green salad and a roasted vegetable medley that included Brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes and kale.

We were able to help a young mother of two who had lost her job during the shutdown. She has worked odd jobs here and there but was still short on rent. She left with some assistance, several bags of groceries and, in her words, “a grateful heart.”

This week we are asking for your help in collecting peach/fruit cups, mac n cheese, soups, tuna, spam or other canned meats (with pop off lids) and bottled water. Donations may be dropped off at our alley door on Saturday, 10 am to 11 am. UCO staff will set up a table in the doorway at the second alley door and donors are asked to put donations on the table. Staff will remain on the other side of the table and keep a safe distance from donors. We also need gently used jackets and sweatshirts as requests are increasing for these much-needed items. If you want to help but can’t make it Saturdays, you can also send a check to UCO at 241 Cedar Ave, Long Beach CA 90802

We have received so much love and so many donations throughout the holidays and the year. Thank you so much for everything you give to UCO. We are grateful for your help!
