S. Mark Taper Foundation

Grant Award

s-mark-taper-foundationThe S. Mark Taper Foundation has awarded Urban Community Outreach a one year grant in the amount of $10,000 for program support.

The local non-profit organization’s goal is to prevent homelessness and lift those who are homeless out of that situation. The UCO works one on one with the people who come to them to prevent homelessness offering services, resources, and referrals. Their mission is to advance the interests and promote the welfare of the economically disenfranchised and homeless people in Long Beach by offering a welcoming environment to provide respite, nutrition, opportunity, and hope.

UCO is extremely grateful to grantors, like S. Mark Taper Foundation, and their community partners who are vitally important to make it possible for UCO to draw people in with 20,000 hot, nutritious meals a year, serving 3,000 unduplicated people annually. People are interviewed as to what their specific needs are and their file of needs is created.

They are offered healthcare, a computer lab, document storage, resume building, job skills, referrals, resources, child care assistance, and assistance with birth certificates. Families working with UCO to improve their situation and reach their goals are offered motel vouchers. Weather activated temporary shelter is available for individuals, and ultimately the goal is permanent housing with services.
